Profile of the Sericulture Department, Lawngtlai District

Geographical Location and Area.

Lawngtlai district is located in the south-west part of Mizoram having international boundaries with Bangladesh in the west and Myanmar in the east. Lunglei and Saiha Districts bounded the district in the north and in the south. The area of the district is1991.19 sq km and it lies between 92.30° – 93° east Longitude and 21.58° - 22.60° north latitudes. The district is connected by National Highway 54. It is about 296 km from state capital Aizawl.

Lawngtlai District Sericulture Office is the youngest among all District sericulture office in Mizoram. It was created in June 2012. Prior to this, it was under the administration of Chhimtuipui District Saiha. Lawngtlai District Sericulture Office is now headed by District Sericulture Officer and run in full swing. It is located in the heart of the Lawngtlai town and at this Point one can have a view the beautiful Blue Mountain, the highest peak in Mizoram.

Village Level Centers:

Lawngtlai District Sericulture  is divided into four village level centre V L C as Lawmgtlai, Sangau, Bungtlang and Chungtei, for efficient implementation and monitoring of various activities. The Demonstrators are in charges of and look after the circle.

          Since the  establishment of the office, District Sericulture officer and staff Lawngtlai are striving hard to bring changes to the community by adopting Sericulture as it is best suited for rural people. The development activities taken up by the Department of Sericulture at Lawngtlai, are to provide high yielding varieties, Saplings and cuttings free of cost to the farmers  for establishment of mulberry garden. Supply of rearing equipments as such Plastic and Bamboo trays Chemicals Disinfectants, machineries etc at subsidized rate. The Department also supplies G. C. I sheets to the farmers for roofing of Rearing House. In addition to these, the Departments also supplies Disease Free Layings and buy back cocoons produced by the farmers. Imparting Trainings on management of garden, Field Demonstration and Rearing of Silkworms to the farmers to improve skills and knowledge to boost up the Sericulture production and productivity.
